A regular at right-back throughout the youth ranks, Todd made his Under-18 debut in the 2009-10 season, as Dermot Drummy followed the annual tradition of introducing soon-to-be first-year scholars into the ranks whilst still at school. His energetic and enthusiastic approach proved both popular and impactful, and he produced back-to-back assists early in his youth team career, including a superb 90-yard run in the match against Cardiff City.
Playing as a midfielder or a wide forward for much of his first season as a scholar, Todd has led Chelsea's Under-18 team in goals as of January 2011, and scored his first goal for the Reserve team in March 2011 away to Bolton, playing as a right-back.
In May 2011 Todd scored a spectacular equaliser in the 2010-11 national Premier Reserve League Final, which Chelsea ended up winning on penalty kicks. His ascension into Dermot Drummy's reserve team ranks was made full time ahead of the 2011-12 season.
Despite playing a near-full schedule at Reserve level, Todd also saw plenty of youth team action en route to winning the 2011-12 FA Youth Cup, a competition in which he was ever present. To cap a successful season, he travelled as part of the Champions League Final squad and was involved in the celebrations after beating Bayern Munich.
He was named the Under-21 team captain for the 2012-13 season.
Todd was called up and capped by England at Under-19 level in October and November of 2011, having previously been overlooked at every age level. He scored his first international goal against Slovenia in May 2012.
